RPGといえばケルト、というぐらいRPGゲームとイングランド・トラッドミュージックの相性は抜群なわけです。それ以前の「ドラゴンクエスト」「イース」などは交響曲が主流だったのですが、いつの頃からか、RPGを担当する作曲家はトラッドミュージックに独自解釈を施したオリジナルなゲーム音楽を完成させ、定番化していった経緯があるように思います。また80年代後期に大ブレークしたエンヤやアディエマスの影響は大きく、必然ともいえます。

セロニアス・モンキースがアイリッシュ・トラディショナル？

「ファイナルファンタジー」「ポポロクロイス」「玉繭物語」「幻想水滸伝」、「アークザラット」他、当時のRPGを代表するタイトル曲は例外なくトラッド・ミュージックのテイストをうまく取り入れてアレンジされている秀作のラインナップです。そんな中になぜかトラッド風味が薄い「moon」がセレクトされております。　無論、ローナンさんのこともイーリアン・パイプのキーも知る由もなく、とにかく「プロミス」はケルトであると言い張り、開き直った私は、抑えきれないエレクトリックサウンド指向を、ビーナスフライキャッチャーのYokoJKに日本語で歌わせることにより抑え込むという、力技の空気を読まないアレンジを行い、遠く離れたアイルランドの録音スタジオで演奏するローナンさんをさぞかし戸惑わせ、頭を抱えさせてしまったことでしょう。プロミスはともかく、元々トラッド風味の音楽にネイティブアイリッシュのローナンさんが奏でるイーリアンパイプの調べは機会があれば是非聴いて欲しいですね。
